It had been a grueling few weeks for Elle. After the dueling range with Alex she'd been going non stop. Between her shifts at the hospital and catching up on 17 years of new healing techniques she was running on fumes. She'd probably had an average of 4 hours of sleep a night for the last five days. She hadn't been in her apartment for what seemed like a week but was likely only three days. She wasn't actually sure. She hadn't been this tired since her first year of training. Elle wanted a shower and sleep. She had the next 24 hours off and she planned on sleeping through at least 12 of them.
Elle waved to the barkeep as she stepped out of the fire place in the Leaky Cauldron. Very few people were in the dining area off the bar at 6 am in the morning. Floo was the quickest and safest thing when she was this tired. The only good thing about her tiny apartment was the proximity to the leaky cauldron's foo fireplace. Elle turned off the main street by the cauldron shop and made her way down the narrow alley that led to the poorer part of the residential area. A few people were out and about on their way to work or sitting on a bench eating a donut. Elle smiled absently as she put one foot in front of the other. She made it to her apartment on autopilot. She let out a sigh of relief after dragging herself up the three flights of narrow stairs. She unlocked her door and immediately dropped her bag. Elle stripped off her soiled robes and immediately went into the tiny box that was her bathroom, if it could even be considered a room. She could touch the mirror and the opposite wall at the same time. Elle left the door open as she started the shower. The pipes groaned before icy water sputtered out. Elle waited a few minutes for the water to get warm before stepping inside. She just stood there letting the water pour over her tired muscles, eyes closed. The comfort of the water had lured Elle into a doze. A strange scratching noise startled Elle out of her doze. What was that weird sound? She'd heard it before. Her breathing quickened and goosebumps formed on her skin. Elle shut off the water, shoving aside the curtain. She grabbed a towel, wrapping it around herself as she looked into the foggy mirror. She could just see the front door of her apartment and the tiny window but the view was dimmed by steam. She jumped when she saw a dark shadow skitter across the floor. The clacking of claws made her yelp. Demon. It was a bloody demon. They were back. Probably attracted by the magical lamp she'd lit in the living room. It's glow on dim. She needed a weapon. She needed to warn the rest of the building. The monster probably got in because the stupid cheap prick of a landlord had left an opening in a ward or something.
Speed would be Elle's friend. The demon would consume any magic in the room and then go after her blood. She needed to get to her trunk. Thank Merlin her father had kept some of her things in storage. Thank Merlin for her Granda who had taken her things out of her old apartment when she'd gone missing. Now wasn't the time for sentiment. She needed to act quickly. Elle could smell the sulfur stench of the demons now. Elle ran towards her trunk, flipping open the lid and grabbing the sword that was attached to the underside of the trunk lid. It was a lovely short sword engraved with the Kameren crest. Alex had given it to her shortly after he'd woken from his coma after the demon attack. It slid from the scabbard and Elle held it out in front of her, ready to fend of the demons. Nothing. There was nothing in her apartment. Elle spun around in a circle looking. She noticed her front door was ajar. Elle heard the giggle of a little girl outside in the hallway and she knew the demons had gone for easier prey. Without thinking Elle ran outside shouting demons in the building. She banged on her neighbor's door as she ran towards the sound.
A dark shape darted in front of her and Elle lunged with her sword, the tip biting threw black fur. A door cracked open. A blue eye peered into the hallway. Elle shouted at the person to call the ministry, the demons were attacking. Elle didn't wait to see if the person complied she continued down the stairs, one arm clutching at the towel that had come untucked.
The landing was filled with shadows. The wall sconce that should have lit it up was busted. Elle paused halfway down the stairs, waiting for the attack. Were the shadows moving? Was that a demon? Elle could barely breath. She needed help. She needed Alex. She couldn't believe the demons were inside. No one would be safe now that demons could get inside buildings. Popping sounds started Elle. People had used magical transportation. Would that cause a flux? Elle screamed for them to stand back that demons were in the building. They had a little girl. Elle could hear the demons sucking her blood as the girl screamed.
Elle hadn't seen the stunning spell or the hitwizard who had fired it. A numbing sensation spread across her body and she crumpled to the floor, sword clattering down the steps as she lost her grip.
Elle woke up some time later. She was in a tiny square box with bars on three sides, wearing only a towel. Elle had no clue where she was. She felt sore and sluggish and her head pounded. She wanted sleep. She shifted on the concrete slab. She was in a cell. What the bloody hell happened. Elle shivered as cool air flowed over her exposed shoulders. Elle glanced down to find that she was naked except for a damp towel. Footsteps came and suddenly a wizard in the colors of a hitwizard were in front of her. The man opened the cell telling her to stay put. He handed her a very large robe. Elle took it and wrapped herself in it. It fell to the ground, trailing by a few feet. Elle clutched at it to keep it closed.
"Where am I?" Elle croaked, her voice hoarse. She remembered getting off work. Going home. Demons.
"Did you find the little girl? Is she safe?" Elle asked as she was told to be quite and escorted into a interview room. She was shoved into a chair. Elle sat there waiting.
The door opened and the questions began.
Who are you?
What is your name?
Why did you have a sword?
Who did you stab?
Demons?
What kind of demons?
It was rerentless. Elle was frustrated by the interviewers. They obviously didn't know much about demons. They probably had been very young when the demons last attacked. Sheltered children. Elle answered their questions as best she could but she was so very tired and it was hard to think.
