Alex could see it coming--he'd known it would once Elle found out about Cain being dead. He tensed, his arm involuntarily tightening around Elle's waist.
"Oh Cain, when?"
"Oh, a long time ago!" Cain said cheerfully, trying to brush past her concern. He didn't want to talk about his deathday, even with such a good friend.
"You lied. You said he was fine. I asked you about Cain several times and you never once mentioned that he had died, how could you, you bloody monster" She said picking the book off the desk and wacking Alex on the stomach with it punctuating her last words.
"OOF!" Alex was suddenly bent over, hands automatically going to his stomach, one rising to shield his face in case she struck there next, while it was so conveniently at Elle height. "I didn't! He's fine!"
"--Really I am--" Cain interjected, silenced by a Look from the small healer.

Cain's cheerfulness did not dampen Elle's anger. She was furious with Alex. He had ample time to tell her about Cain's death instead of allowing her to just find out like this. It was a shock to see her friend dead. Pain and grief rushed through Elle fueling her rage. Her grandda was dead and now her friend. It hurt to see Cain as a ghost. She was just not prepared. Why was he still here? How did he die? When? Would she have been able to save him if he had been here.
Elle knew she shouldn't have hit Alex but she needed to do something and he was there. So she hit him a second time hitting his hand before throwing the book down on the ground and stepping away from Alex horrified at her own temper.
Elle bit her lip as tears stung her eyes. "You could have told me he was a ghost but you didn't. You lied by omission. What else are you hiding Alex? You probably thought you were saving my feelings. But please don't do me any more favors. Have any more secrets to tell me? Hidden ex wife? Drug addiction? I need to know it all Alex if this relationship is going to work. Even if it will hurt me because coming from you is better than finding out on my own," Elle said as she hugged her arms to herself as she stared at him waiting for him to let out any more bombshells.

Her words stung him, and the tears cut straight to his core. He'd never made her cry before, it was a horrible feeling. He'd wanted to spare her even more pain when she'd returned, and then as time passed it just got harder and harder to tell her. Cain was reluctant too, he knew. He hated being reminded of his status, and seeing one more old friend who didn't know was a big reminder.
Alex shook his head, stepping closer to Elle with his arms out. He saw Cain disappear silently from the corner of his eye, leaving them alone. "No Elle, nothing like that, I promise." He bent down and enveloped her in a hug, tightening his grip gently when she tried to hit him again. "I just--he hates being reminded and I didn't want you to worry. I'm sorry. I should have told you."

Elle wanted to melt into the floor. She hated crying, especially in front of people. But she couldn't help the tears. She glared through them at Alex, waiting for him to take the opportunity to tell her. He had 17 years of life that she didn't have. 17 years of experiences that she knew nothing about. 17 years of differences. She wasn't sure if she could handle 17 years of secrets. An image of the very tall and grown up Sheila popped into Elle's head. How could Elle compare to her? Would Alex tell her about her? Take this moment to tell her about his former love? He had loved her right? He had some kind of feelings for her to have the woman convinced they had been engaged.
I'm sorry. Elle flinched as Alex came closer and she raised an arm to bat him away but he enveloped her in a tight hug and she found herself melting into his embrace as her anger faded from rage to a dull ache. Nothing. He told her nothing. So he didn't have an ex wife or anything like that? Bullshit. There was a very pretty older woman who was in love with him. Elle hadn't planned on confronting Alex about Sheila. She knew he had past lovers in the last 17 years. Someone had to have taught him how to kiss. But this was different. Sheila was a bit crazy but Elle didn't think it was all in the woman's head. She had broken heart written all over her. Had Alex been in a relationship when Elle just popped back into his life? It had been sudden and they'd tumbled fast into their relationship. Taking up the chance they had just started to grasp at before.
Elle was stiff in Alex's arms as she waited longer for him to speak. He said nothing and she pulled away, sadness darkening her eyes. She'd stopped crying.
"I need honesty and truth Alex. I don't break easily and I don't need you to shield me from uncomfortable situations. Were you ever in a serious relationship? I mean I never was but you had 17 years of life..." There Elle did it. She asked about exes. She wanted to die.

She was still mad at him. Mostly he was still holding her because he knew she'd probably take another swat at him if she could. Elle Callahan had a temper and though she was small she had a mean left hook. He'd felt the impact to his hand all the way up his arm. It was still throbbing. She pulled away and he let her, looking at her puzzledly.

Alex took a deep breath. This was something else, was she mad? He hadn't lived a celibate life--had moved on from that phase where he barely acknowledged there was a different gender at all. He had thought she liked him the way he was now, but what if she preferred that younger Alex? Of course, then he would have been her age. Able to grow together, to mature into full adults.
"Elle... I haven't. I have dated, I've had relationships." He flushed at the thoughts the words brought. "But I've never been serious with anyone. Nothing ever lasted long." Most women were attracted to the big strong auror persona, but not many could take the long unpredictable hours, the danger. Not many were willing to be patient with him, or to take it slow. And nothing had lasted long enough for him to call it a serious relationship, his longest one lasted almost 8 months before she disappeared into the Middle East. At least according to the note.

Elle stared intently at Alex's face as she asked the relationship question. She shouldn't have done it. She knew that Alex had been with other people but what the woman at the bar had told her had stuck with her. Elle wanted so hard to believe Alex. To trust him. To not be fixated on his past.

"So you were never engaged with an older amazon with long blond hair and a 15 inch waist, no hips or ass and a mountain range for a chest?" Elle said bluntly. "Because there is a woman out there claiming to be engaged to you and she was pretty convincing,"

Alex blinked, stunned. He blinked again. Well that sounded familiar. He shook his head, laughing incredulously. Was that hag still around? "That sounds like Sheila." He frowned, forehead furrowing. "I went on two dates with her. Even I could see the crazy coming from her." He tried a dig at his own obtuseness, to see if it made Elle smile.
"That was it." He spread his hands, as if to say, what can you do? "I promise, Elle." He looked into Elle's eyes.

The woman had been over the top and just a little manic. So Elle believed Alex when he told her it was nothing. So he hadn't had a serious relationship. There was no hidden fiance or ex wife waiting off stage to pounce at a inopportune moment.
Elle smiled slightly at Alex. "She was at the broomsticks bar and we had a little encounter after you left. You should be proud, I so wanted to pour my wine on her face, but I refrained from that childish action." Elle said with a wry smile.
"I'm going to let you get back to work. I need to find Cain and apologize for my reaction to his being a ghost. I'll er, see you later," Elle said before making her escape.
