Finally, finally, he was released. The sneering of Rollins, the curious eyes, the disappointed look on the face of Crabbe, even the questioning look in Theo's eyes the one time he'd spoken to Alex had been grating. He hadn't changed clothes since waking up on the second, been stuck in a holding cell (solitary) and escorted to and from the loo past those morbidly curious eyes. He'd been not-so-slowly going mad. Elle hadn't visited. Perhaps because they wouldn't allow here, perhaps because she wanted nothing to do with him after waking up to a heart on the bedside table and being interrogated by aurors. She had to have found out who the heart belonged to.
Alex stalked out of the interrogation look with a final glare at Rollins and Crabbe. Honestly he was disappointed in Crabbe, but at least he hadn't let Rollin's foam-at-the-mouth hysteria get to him. Merlin, what had he done to get that man to hate him so much? He itched to shower, change, and see Elle. If she even wanted to see him right now. As soon as he left the anti-apparition field he twisted to the Estate, feeling that familiar stomach-twisting yank as he disappeared. The dogs descended on him as soon as he appeared, barking and bouncing. The food was strewn across the floor, the small door he'd set so that Max II could come to and fro lay open. Elle never would have left the dogs inside the castle, they usually roamed free while he was gone.
"Elle?" He searched through the castle quickly, trailed by the dogs, eager to have finally seen a human after days on their own. No one had fed them... Max would have assumed Elle would have, but Alex was swiftly coming to the conclusion she wasn't here. A spark of panic grew in his chest, he waved, summoning and sending off his patronus to anyone he could think of to ask if they had seen Elle. He doubted if Max had, judging by the torn-apart food in the alcove, but he sent a patronus anyway before twisting and disapparating to Hogsmeade. Nuri was Elle's friend, maybe she had seen her.
---
Hours later, Alex stood in the empty hall of the Estate, a full-out feeling of panic engulfing his chest. No one had seen her. She wasn't anywhere he knew to look. No one had seen her since Thursday. She'd walked right out of the Ministry and straight up disappeared. And he hadn't been able to do anything to protect her. The panic was starting to be tempered by rage now, at himself. It had to have been her stalker. He had killed Sheila, and he had Elle. Alex could only hope he wasn't too late.
