Deep in the Forbidden Forest
By its very nature, the phthalo blue of the early autumn dusk instilled one with a sense of foreboding and caution. It was that last breath of twilight, where the sun yawned towards sleep, and the shadows grew in length and number while whispers scurried through trees. There was nowhere like the Forbidden Forest to experience this so completely and, if you were alone, the weight of the impending dark was ever present. It was a common consideration that you did not travel the Forest at night. You never traveled it alone. But Bodi Lovegood had a personal score to settle, and an unanswered riddle to solve. He figured the truth was worth the risk.
The broom racer pulled his collar up against the growing chill as his boots snapped twigs underfoot.
Echoes. One could really go mad in such a place. The simplest of sounds often carried and returned. You could not help but feel the presence of something (or someone) when you walked the woods at night, and noises had a habit of playing tricks on your brain. First the echoes, then the crickets, then the owls, then the wind. These were some of Bodi’s favourite sounds, if he didn’t let them haunt him first.
Making good on his word, Bodi had remained at Alex Kameren’s bedside, officially as a member of the Black Watch but more certainly as the man’s friend. He had used the time to weigh the significance of recent events, including the attack on Azkaban and the mounting visions of his closest friend, Eden. Then he thought back to his own little incident in the Forbidden Forest. He wondered how it was that he slipped from existence for a month and had not shown more signs of it. The reality bothered him, especially since nothing went amiss. No one inquired on his absence. His cat was fed and cared for. He’d grown a little facial hair but nothing bushman crazy. Even his clothes had remained relatively unsoiled. But Bodi distinctly remembered waking up in this forest and learning later that he had an entire month unaccounted for. The answer had to be here. The answer had to be within this immensely dark space.
Bodi ventured deeper and deeper, caring not that the twilight disappeared. The core of the forest held a deep, low drone that spoke of history and magic. It was meditative and intoxicating in a way that welcomed you home or made you crazy. In Bodi’s case, he had heard the rumble before and found it comforting. The forest breathed heavily and moved beneath his feet. It tremored.
Two hours passed before he stumbled upon a gully that was canopied by interwoven branches. The ground was largely free of foliage and was encircled by fallen trunks that could have served as seating were it to be a meeting space. Bodi knew this hollow intimately but Merlin save him, he did not know why. All he did know was the sense of unease that was rapidly filling his insides; the electricity of anticipation and the reality of unfulfilled horrors. The air grew heavy in an instant.
Bodi reached for Dogwood and set him on alert.
“Lumos!”
