"No one knows anything about Max's condition, really." Albert met her eyes, keeping his voice low so Max still couldn't hear over his pounding headache. "In St. Mungo's four hundred-year history, we've only recorded eleven others. Max is the only one who's let us study him, but with no prior research we're just casting into the dark."
Rowena nodded in acknowledgment, watching Max for any sign that well, would tell her anything really. But as she chewed her lip nervously, she couldn’t help but think there had to be a better way to help him. A not so distant memory tugged at her brain but she shrugged it off for now, needing to stay in the moment so she could help if she was needed. Later. Later, she would find something, anything. Rowena Covington was not helpless more than once.
"Now can Empathy be considered a disability?" Rowena let out a shaky nervous laugh at such a typical Max comment. She watched the men anxiously as Max moved to the chair, meeting his gaze as he looked at her.
"Thank you, Ro."
Ro. Not Rowena. Her heart did a somersault in her chest at the informal use of her name and she smiled shyly back at him. The relief that swept through her at his thanks was palpable, her whole body relaxing in one loose breath. He hadn’t minded that she’d seen that. She’d been so unsure with whatever it was happening between them, but he wasn’t angry, wasn’t telling her to leave. Though what he was thanking her for she had no idea. She’d done nothing but worry.
"What do you need, Max? Is there more numbing potion in your office?" Why didn’t she think of that? She really was being no help this afternoon. Useless lovesick fool she chided herself but smiled contentedly when Max started nibbling on the chocolate. Ok, maybe not completely useless.
"I do, but nothing's localized for my purposes. I'll need to brew a new one before tonight."
Wait what? Tonight? He couldn’t possibly still be thinking about going to the bloody gala. There was absolutely no reason for him to come and Albert seemed to agree with her.
"You're sure you want to go tonight? Milton and I won't force you."
"No, it's fine. I want to."
Oh the bloody stubborn idiot. If this was only about saving her from Cutter, well she’d have to set that straight right away. She’d suffer the date as long as Max looked after himself. And who knew, maybe there’d be another random shining knight in armour to save her from Cutter’s awful advances.
“Max. No you shouldn’t…” she said haltingly, unsure whether to bring up their deal in front of Albert but the older man was conveniently pottering around the room with a stupid satisfied smirk on his face for some reason. “Max… If this is about your offer this morning, please don’t push yourself too hard for it. I’ll be ok.”
She had to fight the instinct to brush that fallen strand of hair out of his face, knowing it wouldn’t be the best idea to touch him right now but Merlin, she wanted to. “...I just want you to be ok too.” Was that too much? Was she being as transparent as she felt with her feeling? After what had just transpired, Rowena wasn't all together sure she cared.
"Do you need me to help with anything? Take you to you office? Do you need me to call anyone... Eden?"
