“It was once thank you very much,” she clarified, “and I’d like to see you do it.”
Max grinned playfully in the face of Rowena's scowl. "Sure. You jump over the side, and I'll stop you. I promise."
“You weren’t kidding about Albert though were you? They really are trying to set us up.”
"No. He's not a subtle man." He sighed, crossing his arms as he watched the rest of the players make their way through the maze. "Sorry. If I had the power to redirect their target, I would. I've been staying at Mungo's off and on since I was nine, and I think they still see me as a kid. They don't listen to me." Max's brow furrowed in confusion; why was he sharing all this with her? Max rarely ever shared his personal life at work. If asked about his famous parent, he would simply confirm it and move on. His friendship with Milton and Albert was especially mum for him; their warmth towards him often came off as favoritism, and Max wanted to keep a distance. He worked hard to become a Mungo's-caliber Potions Master, and he wouldn't let rumors about his family negate that. Or rumors about any of his relationships, for that matter.
Max stayed quiet and nodded through the commentary on their levitation stunt, letting Rowena take the wheel. He didn't take complements well, but Merlin knew Rowena did. She smirked up at him when someone made commentary on his nerves and he glared down in mock annoyance. Before either of them could get a snarky comment in, Milton began explaining the next game.
“Well done to all! The Winner for this event is Healer Robert Cutter and his partner, Nina Smythe. Congratulations to you both.” There was a polite smattering of applause broken by a loud chant, “Covington! Kameren! Covingt-” that was quickly ssshed.
Rowena blushed and turned into Max again. He had been distracted by the chanting and instinctively put an arm around her. As soon as he'd done it though, he caught himself and put his arm back down, jumping like he had just touched a hot stove. "Shit - sorry - would you quit doing that?!"
“The next event will be taking place in the courtyard so if everyone would like to apparate, I will explain there.”
Thank god, a reason to step away. Max leaned into the twist of his heel, apparating to the courtyard in one circular motion.
“All here? Good. Ok, time for 'Blop or Flop'!" There was a laugh in the crowd and Milton paused, again looking at his husband in exasperation. Albert grinned and gave a cheeky thumbs up. "Anyway, it's just a good old fashioned game of Whizzball! You were all assigned a colour at registration so please stick to that colour and, well you all know how to play."
Max's ears perked up at the mention of Whizzball. Finally, something he could do. As the crowd spread out to find hiding places, Max didn't bother. His sharp green eyes darted around, looking for his target. The only, single target he cared about hitting before he got out of the game: Robert Cutter. He smiled crookedly when he found his target halfway up a weeping willow in the north corner of the yard. He focussed on his prey, stepping quietly back around the corner of the north entrance to the courtyard.
"And.... BLOP!" Albert's voice rang out across the courtyard with a voice enhancement charm. The older wizard burst out laughing at his husband's full-body cringe at the mention of the name as the two apparated out of the courtyard to watch the battle unfold from the second-floor windows.
Immediately, Max blocked two whizzballs thrown in his direction with a glowing hand; he hadn't hidden himself well, so he knew he would be a immediate target. With his other hand, Max wound up and tossed a green whizzball of his own underhanded in Cutter's direction. It looped and curved, making its way around the branches before exploding on impact with Cutter's chest, leaving a large, green powder stain across his torso. In his surprise Cutter fell backward out of the tree, falling a short distance and landing on his back in the grass. When he looked up, Max was standing at the base of the tree with an evil grin.
"Damnit, Kameren!"
Max laughed and turned with a sweep of his Mungo's robes, blocking another toss at him in his wake.
