Name: Janika Baumgartner
Age: 26 at the time of the Flux.
Birthdate/place: 15-06-1995 in Erfurt, Germany
Species: Human
Gender: Female
Family: Pureblood.
Hans Baumgartner - Father, deceased
Emilia Baumgartner - Mother, deceased
Helen Pearson - Ex-wife, alive
Appearance:
Hair: Dark Brown
Eyes: Brown
Build/height- Average in height, Janika possesses an athletic build with broader shoulders and hips than one might expect hidden under her robes.
General Description- The first thing the eyes are drawn to on Janika are the jagged, dark scars climbing her left arm, the result of a dark lightning curse. The scars stand out against pale skin, well muscled from hard training and mostly unmarked aside from the aforementioned curse scars. A soft face is offset by sharp eyes and large lips that reveal prominent teeth when she smiles. Her hair, dark brown and wavy, requires magical upkeep to maintain, as without it her hair will stand out as though statically charged, another side-effect of the dark lightning.
An astute eye will catch a slight limp to her walk, though only when her concentration slips. A result of combat in the Demon Wars, she wears a magical prosthetic leg that attaches mid-thigh. Despite the risk of the enchantments on it being dispelled, she vastly prefers the performance over a mundane prosthetic.
Though Janika was never one for fashion, she was raised in a moderately well-off Pureblood family, and thus dresses with some sense of style. Preferring Muggle clothing, she often wears simple dresses or slacks and dress shirts, usually in subdued or natural colors.
Possessions- Very few. A heavily warded family home in Thuringia, a similarly warded home in Cornwall, as well as her wand and the clothes on her back.
Personality:
Temperment/Mental Attributes- Janika is a wary person. Slow to trust someone and even slower to like them, she is often suspicious of the motives of everyone. Though she broke away from her parents' line of thinking at a young age, she was still raised to calculate the worth of others based on what they could do for her. Others are not likely to see her this way, as she's a social chameleon by necessity, adept at faking a smile and projecting a personable facade.
Strong in her convictions, Janika firmly believes in the general concept of good over evil, though she isn't convinced that society as a whole will be able to get there. She opposes evil, and is wary of those claiming good intent.
Alliance- Technically allied with the "good" side, though it'd be more accurate to say she is opposed to the "bad" side.
Alignment- Chaotic/Lawful Neutral
Employment&Education:
Former House- As a Durmstrang graduate, Janika never belonged to a house, though her wife always insisted she would have been a Slytherin.
Job- Auror
Employer- At the time of the Flux, the British Ministry of Magic DMLE, formerly the German Ministry of Magic DMLE
Other:
Magical Skills- Like most Aurors, Janika is an accomplished Occlumens, and at the insistance of her mentor in the Auror Corps, became a passable Legilimens.
Patronus- Owl
Wand- Oak, 11 inches with hair of Sphinx core. Like her, the Sphinx is shrewd and slow to trust. It took months of slow progress and wand-work to form a real connection with her wand, but once she did she found a wand that was excellent for Defensive magic and Transfiguration. The wand is perfectly straight until the base, where it twists and gnarls into a shape that somehow is an exact fit for her hand. It is adorned with protective runes, a common sight on the wands of Durmstrang students who studied runework.
Goals/Aspirations- A woman out of time, Janika's goals have always been to root out darkness in the magical world. Now, with no obvious direction to point that desire, and with her only living relative having moved on and remarried, Janika is floating through this strange new world, frustrated at finding no place for her skills.
Other Information- Fluent in 3 languages (German, her mother tongue; Norwegian, from her schooling at Durmstrang; English, both from school and working in England).
History-
Janika Baumgartner was born to Hans and Emilia Baumgartner on June 15 1995. Hans, a Pureblood Noble, retained one of the three Thuringian seats in the Deutsche Magisches Gericht, the German equivalent of the Wizengamot and thus spent most of his time away in Bavaria attending to Government matters. Her mother Emilia was the daughter of a prominent English pureblood family and strove to raise her daughter the same way. From early in her childhood, Janika endured etiquette classes as well as typical upper class education which included equestrian training, music, and politics. She spent the majority of her time at her family's estate in Erfurt, the largest city in Thuringia, though when her father was away from the courts the family would split their time between their retreat in Cornwall (a wedding gift from her mother's family) and her father's ancestral home and hunting grounds in the Thuringian Forest.
Early in her education, Janika realized that as much as she loved her parents, she did not hold with their ideals of Pureblood supremacy. Though they were tolerant and accepting of the presence of Muggleborn and Halfbloods, they maintained a very strict "holier-than-thou" attitude, firmly believing themselves vastly superior to those of lesser pedigree. Despite this, she continued her education, and in the fall of her 11th year began attending Durmstrang at her parents' urging, passing up a place at Beauxbatons and Hogwarts. It was at Durmstrang that she became fascinated with the Dark Arts, in a clinical and theoretical sense. She became a renowned duelist, even becoming president of the school's Dueling Club in her sixth and seventh years. Her Dark Arts and Defensive Combat instructor at Durmstrang, Gustav Torstensson, recognized her talent and pulled strings to get her accepted into the German Auror Corps right after graduation, bypassing the typical year of pre-training.
During her first year with the corps, Hans Baumgartner contracted and quickly succumbed to a virulent strain of Dragon Pox. Stricken with grief, mother and daughter reacted in strikingly different ways - Janika became more passionate about her work, throwing herself in head-first to drive away her grief. Emilia, in contrast, withdrew into herself, moving permanently to the home in England and becoming a bit of a recluse. Janika visited when she could, but work kept her away more often than not. That is, until August of 2015 when a member of the British DMLE informed her of her mother's murder. The evidence on hand strongly suggested that she'd been killed as part of a Dark ritual. Stubbornly believing herself the only one capable of solving this, she pushed for and was eventually granted a transfer to the British DMLE so that she could investigate the matter herself.
During her investigation, Janika met Helen Pearson, a woman her own age who owned a shop in the town where her family's home was located. She vaguely remembered her from her childhood, and knew from her mother's letters that Helen had been delivering food and potions supplies to the estate. In the course of the investigation, Janika discovered that Helen was under the effects of a long-term Imperius Curse. With the help of Legilimancy, she was able to break through the curse, releasing Helen as well as discovering the terrible truth: under the effecets of the curse, Helen had killed her mother and removed her heart in a Dark ritual.
Together, the two hunted and defeated a fledgling dark wizard who styled himself as "Lord Norvo", otherwise known as Benjamin Miller, a disgruntled Department of Mysteries worker who had been let go for his obsession with finding a way to truly raise the dead. By the time of his defeat at their hands, he'd been responsible for fifteen deaths, including her mother's.
Despite Helen's feelings of guilt at her part in Janika's mother's death, Janika did not blame her. She decided to remain in Britain for a time, claiming that Dark events seemed to happen much more often in Britain than in Germany. The two grew closer over this time, and by the end of 2017 they married in a small, intimate ceremony consisting mostly of Helen's family and Janika's few remaining relatives on her mother's side.
She settled into a quiet life in Cornwall, her obsession with hunting the Dark Arts fading into the background as she found domestic bliss taking over. That is, until November of 2019 when a large scale attack on Hogsmeade brought her into action. During the attack and subsequent defense of the town, Janika found herself locked in a violent duel with two unknown wizards. She prevailed, but not without heavy injuries: a lightning curse had struck and disabled her left arm, leaving it horrifically scarred, and a Dark cutting curse had severed her right leg just above the knee. During the course of her recovery, it started to become clear to her that forces beyond her capability to oppose were in play, both in the outside world and within the Ministry. She and Helen retreated from the public world, layering privacy and defensive wards over their estate. She continued to provide support to those she trusted, including members of The Black Watch, though she never officially joined their ranks.
The day following the defeat of The Masked Lady, Janika has returned to the Ministry and resumed her work at the urging of her fellows in the Auror Corps. During the cleanup of The Masked Lady's forces, Janika became involved in a duel in the middle of Diagon Alley. During the desperate fight, where a number of Killing Curses were thrown her way by a wizard with nothing left to lose, she apparated with the intent of surprising the wizard from behind. She reappeared with a spell already on her lips. "Bombarda!" she cried, wand pointing where she had expected her opponent to be-
-Only to find that she had blasted a hole in the wall of a shop. Her rain-slick clothing steamed in the baking sun of a clear, bright summer day. The shoppers around her stared, some fingering their wands. The shopkeeper began shouting at her, gesturing frantically at the damage she'd caused.
Her foe was nowhere in sight. A rushing sound filled her head. She fainted.
