Name: Jackson Adedayo Nelson-Obi, known as “Maestro”
Age: 29
Birthdate/place: July 18th, 2009
Species: Wizard
Gender: Male
Family:
Father: Sangodele Obi - Nigerian Diplomat for the Ministry of Magic, lost to the Flux at 44. Excommunicated member of the prominent Nigerian Pureblood Obi bloodline.
Mother: Maria Nelson - Poet, Lost to the Flux at 36. Half-Blood.
Appearance:
Hair: Maestro’s hair is thick, black, and tightly-curled in a way that makes it appear almost sculptural when it sprouts high off the top of his head. It has a mind of its own and Maestro prefers it that way, only bothering to tie it down with a silk patterned scarf on days he feels like wearing his favorite Pork-Pie hat. His chin is nearly always scruffy with a patchy beard, but Maestro meticulously manicures the pencil-thin mustache sitting just above his upper lip to the point where it almost looks drawn-on.
Eyes: Almond-shaped and a rich Amber-brown, Maestro’s eyes are hidden behind his rose-tinted round spectacles whether he’s outside or in.
Build/height- Maestro has an average build, standing at 5’11” with his broad shoulders and small waist giving him a vaguely upside-down triangle shape. He puts on muscle easily; even an afternoon of vigorous exercise will leave him looking slightly more fit than the morning before.
General Description- Maestro has coffee-colored, lightly freckled skin that turns a darker, richer brown after a few hours in the sun. He has several notable tattoos: the iconic piano part to Thelonious Monk’s “Blue Monk” is tattooed across his chest in a crooked line that makes it apparent he did it himself. A snake curls around Maestro’s left hand, the tail on his forearm, up his hand, to its head on his left ring finger, an homage to his former house. Up his right shoulder is a large swirl of color that, upon closer inspection, is a swarm of butterflies. Maestro claims it is every species of butterfly that can be found outside Calabar, Nigeria. This is something he definitely does not know.
Maestro’s smile is electrifying, owing largely to his perfectly-straight, startlingly-white teeth. Even when he isn’t singing, if Maestro smiles wide people turn to look at him.
If a Victorian-Era dandy was tasked with dressing himself only by dumpster-diving in the streets and alleyways of Paris arts communities, he would end up looking exactly like Maestro. The musician dons himself in fitted slacks and shirts with suspenders almost exclusively, accessorizing in endless combinations with his extensive collection of antique jewelry. When traveling through the wizarding world he layers elegant, embroidered silk or velvet robes he inherited from his father in shades of purple, burgundy, or sapphire. Though his style is eclectic, everything is perfectly tailored. He would rather die than appear disheveled.
Possessions- Maestro tends to collect only vast quantities of things he’s interested in, and owns nearly nothing practical. His antique jewelry collection is a point of pride for him. He also has a small orchestra’s worth of instruments. In order to conduct his orchestra via his piano, Maestro has to know how to play each instrument beforehand, so these objects make up a majority of his apartment; he sleeps on the floor on a bedroll in his small studio, surrounded by his instruments.
Acquired in Paris while he played there, Maestro is also rarely seen without his trusty pipe. The stem is a well-worn long cherrywood, sloping down into bowl intricately hand-carved in ivory into the face of Merlin. The smoke comes from Merlin’s open mouth, and smells suspiciously unlike tobacco.
Personality:
Temperment/Mental Attributes-
Confident and magnetically charismatic, Maestro needs human interaction more than he needs oxygen. When he isn’t actively performing on a stage, he smiles and laughs with his friends just as boisterously as he would be playing music. He’s had a difficult upbringing after the Flux, and when faced to choose between laughing and crying, he has always chosen to laugh.
Outside of his usual haunts, Maestro is equally as confident and adventurous. He is sharp-witted and adaptable, always willing to try something new. When presented with an opportunity Maestro has never said no, no matter the dubious legality of what he’s being offered. When he isn’t in a position to be the showman he falls easily in to the ‘class clown’ archetype, always with the last word.
Alliance- Himself, his drinking buddies
Alignment- Chaotic Neutral
Employment&Education:
-Adults-
Former House- Slytherin
Job- Troubadour
Employer- The Three Broomsticks houses Maestro above the bar and feeds him in exchange for his performances, but he doesn’t make an actual paycheck beyond tips and free drinks provided by patrons. He doesn’t mind, he has all he needs.
OWLs/NEWTs- Jackson never really expressed an interest in most magic and his grades reflected that: he failed the first time through in every subject except for his E in charms. Upon his second round of examinations, he managed to pass each class with low-A’s.
Other:
Magical Skills- Maestro’s musical skills are truly unique; over the course of several years of study and practice He became his own big band, learning to charm his piano to control several instruments at once. As far as he knows, he is the only living musician using this method.
Patronus- It’s rare that Maestro can summon a full-formed patronus, but on one or two occasions he’s cast the spell and had the face of a Capuchin Monkey smile back at him.
Wand- 16in, Unicorn Hair, Birch
Goals/Aspirations- After a rough childhood, Maestro’s tired of heartache. He just want to know, when he reaches the pearly gates, he’ll get to shrug, clap St. Peter on the back and admit he had fun.
Other Information- Maestro sings in a scratchy tenor, and is often prone to sing-speaking spoken poetry in his raspy Inner-City-London accent. The music he plays is a combination of funk, blues, jazz, and soul; something energizing to get the usually rigid English wizarding folk up and dancing. He can also sing in French and Yoruba.
History-
Maria Nelson was reading her poetry at the Ministry of Magic’s Arts Gala in 2008 when she spotted a tall, dark and handsome stranger from the stage. After her performance Sangodele Obi was ready to propose on the spot, but she made him wait a year of dating before deciding to say yes. There was only one problem: San was from a prestigious, untouched pureblood aristocratic Nigerian family. Maria was the daughter of a hard-working witch and her muggle, jazz musician-husband. In order to marry Maria Sangodele had to cut ties and forfeited his inheritance. The two married and settled in London. They never regretted it.
The following year they welcomed their only son, Jackson Adedayo Nelson-Obi into the world. He had a largely normal and happy childhood; even without San’s family the Nelsons were a loving and strong support system. Jackson took after his boisterous grandfather, who he spent most afternoons with while his parents worked. As soon as he was tall enough to reach the keys from the bench, the old band-leader had his grandson learning to play the piano.
According to his mother, Jackson knew how to play the piano before he could even speak. It was in his blood well before his magic ever presented itself. He picked up as many instruments as his grandfather could provide for him, and was willed even more after the old man’s death. His maternal grandparents died within a month of each other in the winter of 2019, and the grieving family moved into Wizarding London to separate themselves from the sad memories.
When Jackson turned eleven and his Hogwarts letter came, he was worried. There was talk of war, he would read it in the news and hear his parents whispering about it. Sangodele had aligned himself with the party opposing the Minister for Magic, quietly supporting the Black Watch while maintaining a neutral reputation. He never physically fought in the Demon Wars, but would provide resources and access to information for members of the Watch to sort out who in the Ministry was against them. Maria showed her support more vocally, trying to recruit Demon-Hunters to the cause. Jackson believed his parents’ fight was doing what’s right, but after the loss of his grandparents he worried for them.
In his second year and at the end of the Demon War, Jackson’s fears would come true. In a rush to provide legal aids and healing supplies to members of the Black Watch, both Sangodele and Maria apparated into the Flux and were never seen again. Jackson was one of many children suddenly parentless due to the Flux, and his parents’ meager resources were consolidated to pay for Jackson to be raised in the newly-overburdened Wizarding World foster system. Jackson got lost in the sea of sudden orphans, and was tossed from one orphanage to another for the next few years of his life. His only consistent home in his adolescence was Hogwarts, and even there he kept his head down and just tried to get through. He found solace in the school’s small music program, where he could sit at the piano and recall the melodies of the happiest part of his childhood. If he played long enough it would take him back to that old brownstone in London, where his grandfather tapped his foot on the floorboards and his grandmother made cobblers; where his mother sat at the window and wrote, and his father would burst in the front door after work with a wide smile and roughly tousle his son’s curly hair.
When his turbulent years at Hogwarts were behind him, Jackson just wanted to disappear as well. He packed up what little he had and caught the first port key to Paris, France. There he was relieved to find his place among a thriving Wizarding arts and music scene; he would play nightly in cafe basements, earning places to stay night-to-night as a roaming musician and learning magical tricks of the trade from other musicians. After a couple years he settled into a home bar, Le Tête De Tête, and began his new act: Jackson charmed his piano to control a bass and drum kit at the same time, making himself his own one-man band. In finding his musical style, he found himself. His songs got more complex and he added instruments to his band and quickly earned his stage name: Maestro. The young musician quickly became a staple of Wizarding Parisian night life.
After years of adventure, intrigue, lovers, and constant music in Paris, Maestro began to miss his homeland. He wanted to play music in the same places he watched his grandfather play when he was only knee-high. He packed up and moved again to Muggle London, renting a flat near his grandparents’ old home. He worked his way up from nuisance barfly to Maestro once again in the Muggle jazz scene, this time without his flashy magical tricks. It went well until he ran afoul of a few club locals (how was he to know he had to pay when he lost gambling debts? Wasn’t the point of bluffing that it wasn’t real? No?).
Maestro’s packing up once more and has set his sights on a new musician-residency: The Three Broomsticks, in Hogsmeade. Is there a rich nightlife scene in Hogsmeade? Has the Three Broomsticks asked for a musician-in-residence? No, but there soon will be, and once the Broomsticks hears Maestro, he’s confident they’ll be begging to keep him. Surely, they will.
