Rowena Covington sat in the quaint tea room and smiled at her father. It was so good to see him, she thought as she watched him pour the tea and place a cake on her plate. She really should make more of an effort to see him and her mother. It was just so hard to go home and not be recognized that she could not always bring herself to go. Better that she spend her time trying to fix it than sitting there helplessly.
"So, darling, how is everything? Work? The cats? What did you call them again? Pumpkin and Pie?"
She snorted in amusement. "Pumpkin and Spice dad. Who would call their cat Pie? And work is good. A lot going on. But that's normal. Nothing new for mum though. I'm sorry"
Edward leaned over to take Rowena's hand in his. "Sweetie, stop being so hard on yourself. Our, how do you say it, Muggle medicine has come along too recently. Your mum is doing better. She has whole days where she remembers everything. You really should come by soon. It would do both of you the world of good. She misses you. And you need to have a break from work."
Rowena blinked back tears and smiled wanly. "What do you think I'm doing now dad? I was supposed to meet with Kameren today to talk about some work stuff, but I'd much rather spend time with you. I will try though. Maybe next weekend?"
"Sounds lovely Ro. Now who is this Kameren? A friend?"
"No no no dad! He is the most annoying, infuriating, tedious man I know! Do not get any ideas!"
"Your mother and I thought pretty similar things about each other when we first met you know and now lo-" Edward faltered as he saw his daughter's glare. "All right, all right. Infuriating man. Got it. I'll be quiet now."
Rowena shook her head in exasperation and smiled at her father to let him know he was forgiven. They continued to talk for an hour until Edward started at the time. "Goodness. I need to get going. Your aunt will be needing to go home soon." He stood and Rowena followed, both walking to the door. Edward hugged her tightly and Rowena allowed a small moment of relaxing into her father's arms and remembered happier carefree times. "Don't be a stranger my girl" he said as they pulled apart.
"Next weekend," she promised. "See you soon daddy."
They both turned opposite ways on the street and with one last fond glance at her fathers back as he walked away, Rowena started her journey home. She could have just found the nearest apparition point and been home in minutes, but she needed to think and it really wasn't that far and for once the weather wasn't awful British doom and gloom. Was that even a bit of sun? She grinned at herself as she walked down the pavement.
She was about twenty minutes from home when a sharp scream that was abruptly cut off drew her gaze towards a nearby alleyway. Crap. That had not sounded good. She was instantly torn. On one hand, someone could be hurt. On the other, she was not good in a fight. And this was muggle London. She wouldn't be able to use magic to fight if that's what was needed. Another shout. Rowena threw caution to the wind and went towards the sound. As she approached, she saw someone lying slumped on the ground, blood slowly pooling around them. Shit. Shit. Shit. Not good. And there was another body a few metres away. No blood there. Suddenly a man appeared from a shadowed doorway and started as he saw Rowena.
He was not as surprised as Rowena was when he drew a wand and flung a spell towards her. Instinct saved her as she cast a quick protego, deflecting the curse. What on Earth was a wizard doing attacking Muggles?! She raised her wand to cast her own attack, but the man turned and ran. Rowena frowned. There was no way she was chasing him. She'd caught a good look at him and would just have to go and report him as soon as she could. Her most important issue were the poor muggles on the floor. She needed help. Crap.
