Name: Maxime “Max” Kristopher Kameren-DeVille
Age: 28
Birthdate/place: 14-02-2011
Species: Wizard
Gender: Male
Family:
Kristopher "Curse" Kameren - Father, deceased in 2035 at age 42. Half-Blood.
Amelia Beauregard (née DeVille) - Mother, 48. Muggle.
Peter Beauregard - Step-Father, 52. Muggle.
Arianna Kameren (née Blackthorn) - Step-Mother, 42.
Liam Beauregard - half-brother, 18. Muggle.
Violet Kameren - half-sister, 16.
Evelyn Kameren - half-sister, 11.
Appearance:
Hair: Max's hair is dark brown and close-cut on the sides, with only a bit of the natural wave coming out on the longer top, making his hair look perpetually messy. His facial hair tends to be actually messy, however, ranging from clean-shaven to an unkempt beard depending on his motivation to look presentable.
Eyes: The same sharp, brilliant emerald green as the rest of his father's side of the family.
Build/height- He stands at a rail-thin 6'6" that can most generously be described as charmingly awkward. His height extends into his awkwardly long limbs, with hairy arms and long fingers that he has often been insulted to hear are orangutan-like. Even after years of being finished growing he still isn't quite sure how to stand and sit comfortably with his long limbs, and his posture reflects that. In a group of people he will try to shrink himself to meet the eyes of whomever he is speaking to.
General Description- With pale skin and a bony, heart-shaped face dotted with freckles, Max's default expression is tiredness. His eyes often have bags under them, and due to his height he often walks with a slump. But when he does smile he will flash slightly-crooked ivory teeth, and for a moment it will feel like the sun came out a little from behind the clouds.
Late last year a dark wizard attacked Max, crushing his hands and leaving him for dead. Though he was ultimately unsuccessful in killing him Max didn't come out of the altercation unscathed, and has multiple scars from the wizard's attack. Slashes mark his side and his back where errant spells caught him. His chest and face are marked with runic inscriptions intended to be a torture spell, but were slashed through by his uncle Alex to keep the spell from being continued. His earlobe on his right ear is missing, having been bitten off by his attacker. And the ring finger on his right hand is missing at the knuckle, with significant starring on the middle finger next to it as well. Max is self-conscious especially about the facial scarring and the damage done to his hand, and is bothered when he notices a stranger stare.
He has one tattoo, that is so small and abstract it is rarely seen by people who don't know him: a thin, black, crooked diagonal line on his chest over his heart, meant to memorialize the crooked scar running across his father's face. Curse likely would have hated it, but to Max it was a simple daily characteristic of his parent's face that he didn't want to lose after his death.
Possessions-
Something about muggle auras makes them easier to block out for Max; he lives in an apartment in Muggle London in a quiet neighborhood with his best friend Eden Fletcher, and commutes into the Wizarding World. Their apartment is filled with the usual odds and ends a 26-year-old with his life relatively together would have, but he does have a few prized sentimental possessions. Some beloved books with inscriptions from friends and family members, drawings made for him by Eden through the years, and a Howler left behind for him by his father rank among his favorites.
Feeling lonely in their quiet apartment after the loss of his childhood cat, Max and Eden have recently adopted a kitten. Named Snitch for her small size and soft, golden fur, she is exceedingly affectionate and needy towards Eden specifically; the complete opposite of Max’s last cat, Tabby.
Personality:
Temperment/Mental Attributes-
There are two very different Max Kamerens that depend entirely on his setting: Max in social places, and Max alone. As a teenager, Max began to develop empathic abilities. He can physically feel not only his emotions, but the emotions of others as well. With age his powers have only grown. Though he’s learned to suppress his empathy, when he is in a large group of unfamiliar witches and wizards it can quickly get overwhelming.
It’s a rare blessing when Max Kameren makes a good first impression in a social situation. When in a public place Max is reserved and distracted, often with grit teeth and a set jaw. He is generally quiet and bad with small talk in open places, and will try his best to keep to himself until he can escape. Max calls these places emotionally ‘loud’, like he’s sitting in a room full of people screaming at the top of their lungs, while meanwhile trying to have a chat over butterbeer with a friend at the pub. This can get overpowering, and if he can’t separate himself from these situations Max is prone to letting the emotions get the better of him and showing his firey temper.
It is when Max is in a smaller, more familiar group that he comes into his own. Sociable with a sunny nature, Max has several small groups of close friends. He has a dry, cocky sense of humor, and loves nothing more than to bante. Auras of people he’s close to bring him comfort, and at times he accidentally takes on the emotions and mental characteristics of his loved ones when exposed to them for long periods of time.
In his actions Max is a confident, hard worker. He can never resist a challenge. He is a fiercely loyal friend, always putting his loved ones’ needs before his without a thought. He is a particularly protective big brother, especially with his sisters. Building a friendship with Mas is creating a lifelong ally.
Alliance- His loved ones.
Alignment- Lawful Good
-Adults-
Former House- Gryffindor
Job- Healer/Potions Master-In-Residence
Employer- St. Mungo’s Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries
OWLs/NEWTs- Max received all E’s and O’s in his testing save for, ironically, Potions. He had a particularly hard time with the professor who was scoring his test.
Other:
Magical Skills- Max is an Empath, and can read the emotions of those around him and affect others’ emotions as well. Because of this ability and magic’s connection to emotion, Max is a very talented wandless-magic user.
Patronus- a small, black cat.
Wand- eleven inches, mahogany wood with a core of sphinx-mane.
Goals/Aspirations- Max was captivated with the research and work done by the Ministry and independent investigators in the wake of The Flux. In his spare time, Max does research of his own and volunteers his skills as an Empath and a Potions Master to aid in the research and recovery of those lost in The Flux.
Other Information- Max was born and spent the first eight years of his life in the south of France. He can speak French fluently, but his English accent has a slight Scottish rhythm to it, from his mother’s Scottish cultural heritage.
History-
Max was born to a young mother on Valentine’s Day 2011 in Southern France. The DeVille family has always been warm and loving, and though Max was a happy child he felt even from a young age there was an element of himself that was missing. When he moved back to the United Kingdom at the age of nine, he soon found out whom.
He would never forget the first meeting he had with his birth father; tall, gaunt, and deeply scarred physically and emotionally, Kris Kameren was a memorable presence. He was also a sick man. But when Kris would meet his eyes Max could feel a connection to a part of himself he hadn’t discovered. As Kris got better and they got to see each other more frequently, Max got to know an extremely intelligent, loyal man who didn’t talk down to him despite his age. He was sincere, and kind. When Kris had a clean bill of health Max convinced his mother to share custody of him, so he could better explore his new family tree.
And what a wonder it was: Living with his father, Max was suddenly opened up to the entire Wizarding World. He met his uncle, Alex, and endeared himself to him despite his surliness. His father took up a professorship at Hogwarts, and the two moved into quarters in the dungeons of the school. Max was still too young to attend classes, instead living on campus and befriending the students. Eden Fletcher was one of Professor Kameren’s first students, and quickly became one of Max’s first friends. She was an outcast for her seer abilities, and Max was living in a magical school without being able to participate in it. They were two misfit pieces of a puzzle that just happened to fit together perfectly. Max’s first year in the Wizarding World went by just like that: perfectly.
However, with Kris Kameren darkness was never far behind. Though he warned Max about some of his more infamous abilities early in their relationship, there was still a lot about Kris Max didn’t know. He was better mentally for the most part than when they met, but he was still gravely ill. Max was becoming part of an entire culture he hadn’t known about, and he soon learned that his name came with a lot of baggage. Here, Kris was ‘Curse’, and that curse would often follow them both.
After a demon attack that left his uncle in a coma and Kris receiving threats to their family, Max and his father moved to a small house in Godric’s Hollow. Alex gradually got better and they lived closer to Eden, and for a time things were better again. But the Demon War had started. Max would frequently have to stay with friends while Curse was away fighting with the resistance. Max would get bits and pieces from Eden, but Kris was good about hiding the worst of their world from his son.
Then, they were attacked.
The Masked Dark Lady and her minions laid siege to the Kameren house one night, and Max was kidnapped in an attempt to get the Black Watch to surrender. He was her captive for three days before the Black Watch and his father could rescue him, and though he wasn’t hurt physically, he was terrified. It was here he saw the face of evil. Kris and the Black Watch were able to defeat the Dark Lady and free him, but Max would never be completely the same. He had lost a certain amount of innocence; he made a promise to himself to dedicate his life to helping others the same way the Black Watch helped him.
Then, when they finally thought it was over, the Flux devastated the Wizarding World. Hundreds vanished into thin air; including many of the Kamerens’ loved ones. As they returned to Hogwarts for Max’s first year, he watched Kris and his new stepmother Arianna pour themselves into the search and research efforts to retrieve those lost to the Flux.
Max gave his all to his studies and it paid off for him. He was a star student in his Gryffindor classes, but where he struggled most was Potions. Potions came naturally to him, but he struggled with being pushed by his professor: Kris Kameren. His father pushed him to be more than best in his class, and Max excelled to be over a year ahead in his potions studies every year he was at Hogwarts. The pressure Kris put on Max to succeed mixed with stress from Kris’s illness put a strain on their close relationship in Max’s teenage years, and in the summers he would escape to his mother and the Muggle world. Both his parents’ families grew, and Max found himself as the much-older big brother to three younger siblings. He loved them all, often acting more like an extra parent with his over-protectiveness than a cool big brother.
In Max’s fifth year, he started getting terrible headaches. He would be fine in smaller classes or in quiet common rooms, but he would dread evenings in the Great Hall or worse, a Quidditch match. He wasn’t quite sure what was happening, but he knew it was his fellow students who caused it; when people around him were excited in any way, it made every nerve in his body stand on end. Was he going mad? Well, sort of. After several fainting spells, Kris and Arianna brought him to Mungo’s and had him tested. They found out he was an Empath. Though it was described to Max as a rare and wonderful mental gift, Max was horrified. In the absence of another Empath to help him through, Max took extra classes with the Divination professor to try to get his powers under control. She was able to get him enough help to get through his schooling, but Max knew beyond Hogwarts his Empathy would be a burden he had to handle all on his own.
After graduation, Max had offers from several institutions to work for them. From his father and his uncle, the Kameren name had become synonymous with hard work and power. For the first two years, Max rejected all offers. Instead, he worked one-on-one with Kris to earn his Certificate of Potions Mastery. To earn their certificate, a witch or wizard had to study for two years under another Master before taking a rigorous and far-reaching test. This was what Kris had been pushing Max for throughout Hogwarts. Max took Kris up on his offer with an ulterior motive: his father was getting sicker as the years passed, and he wanted to keep a closer eye on him. Working that closely with Kris – then Headmaster of Hogwarts – for two years brought the father and son back together again. Max learned about his father’s entire life, everything he never told him. Working with him on potions allowed him to learn more about his mannerisms. His potions mastery studies told him more about the poison his dad was subjected to, and taught him the reality of how little time he had left with his family. When Max finished his studies and finally passed his test, he had never seen Kris Kameren more proud.
When he earned his Potions Mastery, Max applied for a job at only one place: St. Mungo’s Hospital for Magical Maladies & Injuries. He wanted to stay true to his promise to help people, but Max didn’t want to fight anymore. His childhood was filled with war, and he saw how it affected people. Instead, he would heal those wounds. He learned to use his Empath powers in the healing process, imprinting feelings of warmth and calmness on his more troubled patients. Max had found a place to use his skills for good.
No amount of healing prowess could save Max from his worst fear, though. While substituting a potions class at Hogwarts one afternoon, Kris collapsed with a stroke. By the time he made it to St. Mungo’s he was too far-gone. Max was able to pull him into consciousness just long enough to say his goodbyes. Kristopher “Curse” Kameren died in the early morning, surrounded by his loved ones. Exactly the way he would have wanted.
Consumed by grief, Max took double the hours at Mungo’s and in any of his spare time dove into his father’s notes about the Flux. This was his last big mystery. The one thing The Brilliant Curse Kameren couldn’t figure out. Three years and hundreds of hours of research later, Max is trying to inch closer.
