The old professor sat behind his desk with folded hands, watching his small class of students stare at him with anticipation. He smiled. “Alright, students, we know the history about the Second Wizarding War against Lord Voldemort, but what then? What happened after Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix disbanded after victory?”
Silence. The students were rapt with interest.
“After the death of Lord Voldemort, after all, evil wasn’t eradicated completely. Death Eaters still yearned for the old ways, and went back into hiding until a new leader rose above them. There were many wizards and witches looking to claim that leadership role, but the only one to succeed may have been more powerful than the Dark Lord himself: The Mistress of Masks, Mosrael.”
“At first, her revolution was quiet. It began with the disappearances of Ministry workers; one day they would be here, then the next there would be no trace. They were never found, no one knew what happened. Until one particular Ministry member broke the pattern. That was our own late Headmaster, Curse Kameren.”
“Headmaster Kameren, then an auror, returned to the Wizarding World after his capture and resumed his work. However, there were unseen changes that revealed Mosrael’s true power: she had cast a spell over him, causing him immense pain if he were to ever go against her wishes. She had control over the mind and body of the Head Auror, one of the most powerful wizards in the Ministry.”
“The Dark Lady’s secret was kept silent until an attack on the Department of Mysteries, where Kameren was forced to join his mistress in battle against his friends and family. He was discovered and soon his curse was broken by his brother, Alex. However it wasn’t before many dangerous, ancient artifacts were stolen from Mysteries, some that have never been found. One in particular, however, would reap chaos on the Wizarding World in the near future.”
“A year later, in 2020,” Began the historian, clearing his throat as if he were a great auteur, “Strange things started happening to the magic in this part of the Wizarding World. Simple spells would explode in the casters’ faces, or magic simply wouldn’t work at all. Dark creatures appeared out of thin air at night, seeking out those who possessed magic and sucking the life force from them! Magic couldn’t do anything to harm them, so a Black Watch was formed by Hogsmeade villagers and Hogwarts officials to fight back the creatures in muggle ways.”
“Little did the Watch know that the creatures were of wizard creation. It was the reappearance of a particularly curious object, the Shadow-Stealer. A single wizard operated the Shadow-Stealer: Cain Pierce, who we now know as the ghost Cain the Scorched. It fed on his soul, tapping into the supernatural order that gives us our powers and creating the creatures. Cain was the captive of an evil witch named Scarlet, who forced him to use the stone and create chaos in the Wizarding World. Eventually, Cain escaped and found aid with the Black Watch.”
“With Cain’s confession and information on the Shadow-Stealer, the Watch began to question once more: where had Mosrael gone? They were far from a victory that night in the Department of Mysteries, yet the Mistress of Masks had disappeared. She had kept to the shadows, silently building up her army. But where was she hiding?”
“She hid, as she had before, in the Ministry of Magic, this time placing her curse on the Minister for Magic, Jack Harkness. The leader of the Ministry was at the Dark Lady’s whims, and it may have gone unnoticed if not for a survivor of the same curse taking notice: Curse Kameren saw through Harkness’s façade into the pained curse within, and knew he had to fight to free Harkness as others had for him.”
“Unfortunately, before he could do much with this information, Mosrael became aware of him. In the famed Battle of Godric’s Hollow, the Kameren home was under attack by Mosrael’s Sentinels. The Black Watch retaliated, but the battle left Curse Kameren’s home destroyed, and his son Max kidnapped by the Sentinels.”
“The Black Watch rallied together to find Mosrael and save Max, breaking Cain’s connection to the Shadow-Stealer on their way. The woman who owned the Shadow-stealer also had a rather unusual connection to his mind, and her death snapped something in him. Sources say it took months before he was well enough to even recognize his own twin again.”
The last battle against Mosrael was in Scotland, the Battle of Castle Innvar. The Black Watch faced off against the Sentinels, Jack Harkness’s spell was broken by his loved ones fighting for him, Alex Kameren retrieved Max, and in a one-on-one duel, Curse Kameren defeated Mosrael. The Mistress of Masks vanished, never to be seen again.
However, as we learned with the first and second Wizarding Wars, evil is never truly gone from our world It’s always lurking, waiting for its time to strike. Fifteen years it has been in the shadows, but soon it will yearn for the light again. When and where we can never know. But with the passing of our Headmaster, I wouldn’t be surprised to see it sooner rather than later.”
