History
"Incidentally, my uncle Draca's a ghost. He's a great riot but I have to put a tarp down if he decides to imbibe."
Tarka was born on the witching hour of September 15th, high above the slumbering East in the mountain community of Lhasa, Tibet. Being adjacent to a Tibetan Buddhist temple, the birth was overseen by two sherpas, a monk and three of the family's sages; all those present vowed to protect the infant, as he was born at a time of great uncertainty and impending darkness. The collective lit butter lamps and burned incense in their place amongst the clouds, swiftly bringing clarity and calm to the child. He was named Tarka in honor of a vagrant neighbourhood dog; it was to become a life-long reminder that all things deserve compassion.
Tarka was predisposed to healing and showed promise at a very young age. While his mother and father were called away to tend to their clients, the boy was a welcome observer in Lhasa's temples, providing his own treatments and care to those in need. He learned to blend a multitude of traditions, creating a style of healing that was both individual and worldly.
At the age of ten, Tarka received an enrolment letter from the Durmstrang Institute. His parents had been open about their magical heritage and the invitation to attend such a school was of no surprise to the boy. He was, however, taken aback (and inwardly disappointed) that it was Durmstrang, and not Hogwarts, that called for him. Tarka emigrated to Iceland to be close to a family sage before attending the northern academy barely a hair over eleven.
It took four years, but Tarka ultimately exceeded in getting himself expelled from Durmstrang. It wasn't a matter of acting out but rather honouring his values: he refused to participate in courses which practiced dark arts and set about freeing the live creatures which were slated to be used as target practice. At dinners, his vegetarianism was the bane of the kitchen staff's existence and while Tarka earned exceptional marks in fire-breathing and acro-dance, he failed nearly every other course. There was little call for healers at the northern institute, and little need for a rogue. To ensure he didn't fall behind his Hogwarts counterparts, Tarka took to studying his preferred curriculum on his own.
Prior to entering his fifth year, Tarka traveled on his own to Scotland and met with the Hogwarts Headmistress. He presented the stout-hearted woman with a portfolio of his work and studies and begged a seat in the school, stating that he would be willing to start from the beginning if it meant that he could attend the reputable and proud school. Tarka quickly became a Hufflepuff and he would graduate 2 years later, with a specialization in healing. Although the young man did well on his NEWTs, he chose not to apply for positions that offered the wages of Ministry employment nor the stature of being a St. Mungos mediwizard. With a flat in London (hidden down a narrow, crooked alley), he opened a private practice and continued to build upon the skills he learned as a child. Tarka became a sought-after energy healer for those who knew of his existence but money was often scarce, and more than once, the lad found himself in need of obtaining part-time employment. He worked in apothecaries and even served as a village lamplighter before setting his sights on a career as a professor.
At the beginning of the year 2036, Tarka sent an owl to Headmaster Kameren, requesting a meeting. When Tarka was a student, Healing Arts was a short-lived elective that died out due to lack of space and lack of funding. He would request that the course be reintroduced to the Hogwarts curriculum and would offer to teach the course for free in exchange for room and board. Tarka awaits the Headmaster's response.
