2017, late winter
The sound of wind was the only thing he heard as he ran, the wind picking up and gusting past him, bringing a damp chill. He ran, and his mind emptied, his thoughts and worries falling away. A sense of peace soon fell over him as he settled into the run, his stride lengthening and settling into the familiar long-distance cadence.
Alex had struggled, with the realization that Curse really was family, that it wasn't just a crazy coincidence. The man looked infuriatingly like Cedric. More than Alex did, even. His emotions had been confused, fury and hatred and envy, a myriad of all different emotions. He didn't need Curse, he had a brother, a sister even, who had stayed by his side during the upheaval of Cedric's arrest, who showed up one day and kidnapped him back to their home, never to live alone in a big empty castle again. Whose parents had welcomed him, and treated him kindly, and never asked uncomfortable questions.
Curse was king of uncomfortable questions. He seemed to thrive on them.
The trail led slightly uphill, Alex slowed his pace, enjoying the burn in his muscles, driving worries about fathers and brothers and family from his mind. Finally the trail started looping lazily back to his starting place, and Alex dropped to a slower pace, noticing a familiar figure waiting for him. He stuffed down a stab of irritation as he grew closer, a sudden realization following shortly on its heels.
It was Cedric. How Curse reminded him of him in myriad little ways, each inconsequential and possibly even irrational, filtered through the gaze of a young boy with his family newly shattered and his father gone. He tilted his head in silent inquiry as he finally came to a stop near where Curse Kameren was waiting.
