"Is everything ok though?" Michael asked.
Rowena nodded, letting her hand clasping the flower fall to her side as she looked up at him. "Yeah, I just wanted to ask you to take it easy on Max? He's a bit protective right now? We've been through a lot," she stopped at his dark look. Yeah he'd seen what they'd gone through, had seen the mess she'd been after what the other man had done to her. And of course he'd gotten a few more details about her parents and the attacks that seemed to be following her but she'd always been a bit vague. "I've just told you the bare details so far and I will go more in depth another time, but the point is, try not to antagonise him? Please? I really want you both to like each other. You're my past and he's my future."
Michael frowned. "I hope I'm not just your past Rowie. I'm here now too you know..." he said a little petulantly, before shaking his head with a sigh. He knew what she'd meant to say and she was hard to resist when she looked at him with that large amber eyes. "Ok Rowie, I'll back off a little. I just want to make sure you end up with the best you know,"
"I know. Thanks for looking out for me, but I love him. I don't really need help anymore. I did grow up in the eighteen years since we last saw each other..." she said with a wry grin and Michael groaned rolling his eyes.
"Hard to miss. Didn't think you could get more bossy but I've been proved wrong," he teased and she laughed.
"Shall we go back then? The Renee case sounds super interesting!"
He nodded, gesturing her forwards. "I'll go grab the folders if you want to head back."
Rowena grinned and walked away, his sunflower bright against her dark clothes. Michael didn't follow immediately, his brain whirring as he sorted through the last few minutes. He started as a warmth began to burn his inside pocket and he hastily reached inside to withdraw the small notebook in there. His eyes furrowed as he read the new message inscribed before swearing under his breath. His time with Rowena was getting cut short again.
Michael hurried out from the alcove and towards the shelves where he knew the case files were waiting. He grabbed them and made his way back to the table. He'd hoped to have several more hours researching with Rowena and making sure they discovered the information together. But a job was a job and he was needed elsewhere. He glanced in question at the couple but was brushed off so instead he handed over the files with a small shrug.
"Hey, sorry. I have to go. Business calls. I thought I'd sorted all this out already but something has come up. Call me if you find anything interesting though yeah? We still on for Friday?"
At Rowena's nod and smile, he reached over for a quick hug before turning on his heel without a backward glance and leaving the couple alone.
