She was tired and it wasn't just the 18 hour shift she'd just completed. Rowena Covington stood in her office and looked at her reflection in the mirror on the wall. Her eyes were ringed with black, and there was a certain tinge of yellow to her skin that just didn't look right. But all that paled compared to the fact that she couldn't for the life of her remember what she had been doing two hours ago.
Bryn had just left her office looking just as confused. He'd come rushing in asking why Mrs Bleedle hadn't been checked out yet when Rowena herself had said she would do it. The idea that it hadn't been done promptly, that the elderly woman was still waiting was preposterous. Things like that just didnt happen in Spell Damage and even less so when the Head of Department herself had said she would take the case. But Rowena didn't remember saying she would do such a thing despite Bryn insisting she had. And Rowena felt a sense of dread bloom within her because she believed him. And because it wouldn't be the first time her mind had betrayed her recently.
She eventually apologised and asked her Assistant to sort it out. For once, Rowena had to leave the hospital on time and even that thought worried her. She grabbed her makeup and started the slow process of covering up the tell tale signs of exhaustion. She didn't know why or when she'd decided to keep this from Max but really they did have bigger problems to worry about. She didn't want to add to his worries when they had a War brewing on the horizon. Which was exactly why she had to leave within the next five minutes. She had training to do.
Her nose wrinkled as she regarded her new reflection critically. She'd gotten good at hiding the dark circles and the pale pallor of her skin but her cheekbones were starting to look a little too prominent. It confused her. She'd thought she'd had one thing, all the symptoms fit, but this gaunt appearance... and so quickly... it wasn't right.
For a second, she thought about cancelling on her boyfriend. She worried what he would do it he found out the whole truth behind her carefully concealed exterior. She knew he suspected, he wasn't stupid... and she wondered if perhaps it would be better to just avoid him until whatever this sickness was passed. She was trying out everything she knew, surely one day soon it would all click into place and all would be fine again. And then she could truly put all her focus back into the Doom hanging over them.
Her hesitation lasted all of a second and then the clock chimed two and Rowena decided that she wanted to see Max too much to avoid him today. She hadn't seen him since the night they'd promised to fight together and Rowena had to wave away the small spark of guilt at the thought. It wasn't related. It couldn't be. She would know.
She took one quick last glance in the mirror and for the first time in the past hour, smiled. Rowena Covington didn't do anything badly and make up was no expception. She looked good, if anything, the tiny bit of lost weight made her eyes look bigger. He wouldn't think anything of it, she told herself as she turned sharply, apparating to their designated meeting spot.
